To learn how to <em>use</em> lookups, see\n<a class=\"reference internal\" href=\"/el/3.1/topics/db/queries/\"><span class=\"doc\">Making queries</span></a>; to learn how to <em>create</em> new lookups, see\n<a class=\"reference internal\" href=\"/el/3.1/howto/custom-lookups/\"><span class=\"doc\">Παραμετροποιήσιμα Lookups</span></a>.</p>\n<p>The lookup API has two components: a <a class=\"reference internal\" href=\"#django.db.models.lookups.RegisterLookupMixin\" title=\"django.db.models.lookups.RegisterLookupMixin\"><code class=\"xref py py-class docutils literal notranslate\">RegisterLookupMixin</code></a> class\nthat registers lookups, and the <a class=\"reference internal\" href=\"#query-expression\"><span class=\"std std-ref\">Query Expression API</span></a>, a\nset of methods that a class has to implement to be registrable as a lookup.</p>\n<p>Django has two base classes that follow the query expression API and from where\nall Django builtin lookups are derived:</p>\n<ul class=\"simple\">\n<li><p><a class=\"reference internal\" href=\"#django.db.models.Lookup\" title=\"django.db.models.Lookup\"><code class=\"xref py py-class docutils literal notranslate\">Lookup</code></a>: to lookup a field (e.g. the <code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">exact</code> of <code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">field_name__exact</code>)</p></li>\n<li><p><a class=\"reference internal\" href=\"#django.db.models.Transform\" title=\"django.db.models.Transform\"><code class=\"xref py py-class docutils literal notranslate\">Transform</code></a>: to transform a field</p></li>\n</ul>\n<p>A lookup expression consists of three parts:</p>\n<ul class=\"simple\">\n<li><p>Fields part (e.g. <code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">Book.objects.filter(author__best_friends__first_name...</code>);</p></li>\n<li><p>Transforms part (may be omitted) (e.g. <code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">__lower__first3chars__reversed</code>);</p></li>\n<li><p>A lookup (e.g. <code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">__icontains</code>) that, if omitted, defaults to <code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">__exact</code>.</p></li>\n</ul>\n<section id=\"registration-api\">\n<span id=\"lookup-registration-api\"></span><h2>Registration API<a class=\"heading-anchor\" href=\"#registration-api\"><span class=\"visually-hidden\">Link to this heading</span><span aria-hidden=\"true\">#</span></a></h2>\n<p>Django uses <a class=\"reference internal\" href=\"#django.db.models.lookups.RegisterLookupMixin\" title=\"django.db.models.lookups.RegisterLookupMixin\"><code class=\"xref py py-class docutils literal notranslate\">RegisterLookupMixin</code></a> to give a class the interface to\nregister lookups on itself. Direct\nfield references, aggregates, and <code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">Transform</code> are examples that follow this\nAPI. A class is said to follow the query expression API when it implements the\nfollowing methods:</p>\n<dl class=\"py method\">\n<dt class=\"sig sig-object py\" id=\"django.db.models.as_sql\">\n<span class=\"sig-name descname\">as_sql</span><span class=\"sig-paren\">(</span><em class=\"sig-param\">compiler</em>, <em class=\"sig-param\">connection</em><span class=\"sig-paren\">)</span><a class=\"heading-anchor\" href=\"#django.db.models.as_sql\"><span class=\"visually-hidden\">Link to this definition</span><span aria-hidden=\"true\">#</span></a></dt>\n<dd><p>Generates the SQL fragment for the expression. Returns a tuple\n<code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">(sql, params)</code>, where <code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">sql</code> is the SQL string, and <code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">params</code> is the\nlist or tuple of query parameters. The <code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">compiler</code> is an <code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">SQLCompiler</code>\nobject, which has a <code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">compile()</code> method that can be used to compile other\nexpressions. The <code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">connection</code> is the connection used to execute the\nquery.</p>\n<p>Calling <code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">expression.as_sql()</code> is usually incorrect - instead\n<code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">compiler.compile(expression)</code> should be used. The <code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">compiler.compile()</code>\nmethod will take care of calling vendor-specific methods of the expression.</p>\n<p>Custom keyword arguments may be defined on this method if it’s likely that\n<code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">as_vendorname()</code> methods or subclasses will need to supply data to\noverride the generation of the SQL string. When an expression is compiled by\n<code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">compiler.compile()</code>, Django will first try to call <code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">as_vendorname()</code>,\nwhere <code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">vendorname</code> is the vendor name of the backend used for executing\nthe query. A\nprominent example is <code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">__year</code> that transforms a <code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">DateField</code> into a\n<code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">IntegerField</code>.</p>\n<p>The notation to use a <code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">Transform</code> in a lookup expression is\n<code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">&lt;expression&gt;__&lt;transformation&gt;</code> (e.g. <code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">date__year</code>).</p>\n<p>This class follows the <a class=\"reference internal\" href=\"#query-expression\"><span class=\"std std-ref\">Query Expression API</span></a>, which\nimplies that you can use <code class=\"docutils literal notranslate\">&lt;expression&gt;__&lt;transform1&gt;__&lt;transform2&gt;</code>. It’s\na specialized <a class=\"reference internal\" href=\"/el/3.1/ref/models/expressions/#func-expressions\"><span class=\"std std-ref\">Func() expression</span></a> that only accepts\none argument.
